The 2nd annual Charles Knoll Diamond Dash took place this Sunday on October 2, 2011. The prize for the winning couple is a new $15,000 engagement ring.

200 teams took part of the treasure hunt, vying for the most points at the end of the day to win the grand prize.

“So some clues they have to go to a certain place and maybe find a word on a plaque. Other clues, for instance, they’re gonna come find me at my table and I’m going to give them a task to do. Then once they complete the task, I’ll give them the answer they then text in,” explained Bethel Nathan, member of the Susan G. Komen Board of Directors.

Although the Diamond Dash was free, all participants were asked to make a donation. All money raised went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of San Diego.

Christie’s New York is having its Magnificent Jewels sale, providing 340 lots that collectively total up to a presale estimate of $35 million. The Magnificent Jewels marks the official opening of Christie’s fall season around the world, with major sales for important jewelry occuring in Geneva, Paris, London and Hong Kong and returning full circle to New York for the grand finale auction: The Elizabeth Taylor jewelry collection in December.

Belle of the Ball: 32.77 carat, vivid yellow diamond, with such a uniquely intense yellow hue that the GIA ranked it one of the rarest Gemstones in its class.

“As we meet with collectors and dealers around the world in the run-up to this autumn season, it is clear that demand for rare and important jewelry remains as strong as ever,” said Rahul Kadakia, head of jewelry for Christie’s Americas.

“Recent top prices for colored and colorless diamonds and gemstones have helped bring some spectacular jewels into the marketplace, including top-quality D-color diamonds and some truly exceptional fancy colored diamonds in shades of yellow, pink, blue, and green.”

The main attraction of the Magnificent Jewels sale is a 32.77 carat, vivid yellow diamond, ranked by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as one of the rarest gemstones in its class. This large diamond has a presale estimate of $6 million to $8 million.

The New York sale has in its lots fancy colored diamonds in shades of pink, blue, and green, including a 3.21 carat, pear-shaped fancy vivid blue diamond ring with side diamonds at an estimated presale cost of $2.5 million to $3 million. Also included in the sale is an 8.20 carat, pear-shaped fancy purple-pink diamond ring by Tiffany & Co., with a presale estimate of $1.25 million to $1.8 million.

Christie’s has six large D-color diamonds as well as an assortment of fine diamond necklaces, earrings, brooches, and bracelets. The largest of the D-color diamonds is a 25.74 carat, oval-cut diamond ring by Graff, estimated at $3.5 million to $5 million.

“As an organization servicing women, we felt it was important to give back to a charity dedicated to fighting breast cancer, a disease that has impacted the lives of so many people around the globe,” said Karen Sampieri, metro chapter co-president of the WJA. “Greenwish Jewelers has taken part in Race for the Cure for years and was a natural choice to partner with.”

Jennifer Gandia, co-owner of Greenwich Jewelers, expressed support for Breast Cancer research and partnership with the WJA. “Three years ago, my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer.

XO Group, Inc., the company that owns TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com, recently released the results of its engagement ring and jewelry study, surveying over 10,000 U.S. brides and 1,000 U.S. grooms that were either engaged or married in 2010.

The survey concluded that the average engagement ring center stone size was 1 carat, the average weight of diamonds weighed 1.4 carats, and the consumers paid an average of $5,200 lower than survey results from 2008. For diamond engagement rings, 53% of the grooms purchased the round cut, while 30% purchase the princess cut.

In the “Luxury Ring Segment” of the survey, 12% of grooms spend over $8,000 on engagement rings. $13,500 was the average price spent on large diamond and luxury engagement rings, oftentimes holding a center stone of 1.5 carats on average with a 2 total carat weight of diamonds. As for wedding rings in the Luxury Ring Segment, the average cost was $1,560 for brides and $731 for grooms.

The Engagement Survey saw that the current economic climate did not affect the groom’s engagement ring selection, as only 14% surveyed answered that they downsize their choice in ring because of the economy. Almost 25% of the grooms surveyed ended up spending more for their ring than planned. However, on average, couples were spending $600 less on rings this year than couples surveyed before the Recession hit in 2008.

Independent jewelry stores were more favored among grooms than chain stores, with 39% of grooms purchasing from the independent stores and 35% buying from chain stores. Nearly 9% of grooms bought their rings from an online retailer.

This survey acts to find patterns in consumer spending in context with the economic climate and spending habits. “Jewelry is a significant part of the wedding experience and the 2011 Engagement & Jewelry Study provides unparalleled insight into the multi-billion dollar industry,” said Krystyn Clement, senior director of market intelligence for The Knot.

At this time of writing, the top bid was $1,523,613 as of this morning. However, the reserve, or the minimum and unstated amount the seller is willing to accept, has not yet been met. The seller being the U.S. Marshals Service.

The U.S. Marshals Service seized the diamond in a money laundering investigation in Ohio. The diamond belonged to Paul Monea, a northeastern Ohio businessman convicted of money laundering and conspiracy in 2007. Prosecutors said he attempted to sell the large diamond and an estate formerly owned by boxer Mike Tyson for $19.5 million and a boat. The supposed buyer he approached was actually an undercover FBI agent posing as a drug dealer. Monea was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

“A Master Gemologist Appraiser has thoroughly researched the provenance of this diamond, reviewing all available documents regarding known stolen historic diamonds. At this time, there is no evidence that links this diamond to any known stolen or missing diamonds in the United States or abroad,” said the auctioneer. The auction is being run online by Bid4Assets. Bidding began Tuesday morning at the starting price of $900,000. The bidding closes today, September 8.

Astronomers discovered a rare planet made of diamonds, likely to have oxygen apart from carbon. This carbon-based planet is 4,000 light years away in the Milky Way galaxy.

With a high density larger than any known planet thus far, the planet rotates around a small peculiar star known as a pulsar. Its high density suggests that the planet does not contain lighter elements such as hydrogen and helium.

The combination of all these intriguing factors have led scientists to speculate that the conditions call for the carbon to be crystallized, and believe the planet to be completely made of diamond. Diamond forms when carbon is put under high pressure.

Dubbed PSR J1719-1438, the diamond planet has a diameter of 60,000 km (or around 37, 282 miles), which is about five times larger than the Earth’s diameter and is about 300 times heavier according to the astronomers’ measurements. The diamond planet orbits the pulsar in around 2 hours and 10 mintes.
